In late 2009, CSTC helped initiate the TOD pilot project around Yangcheng Lake station. In early 2010 CSTC invited international experts and local planning institutions to start an urban design workshop. The workshop introduced the concept, urban demand and management issues of TOD and began the conceptual plan of the site. The project aims at creating a new sustainable landmark for the city of Kunshan, with low-carbon development and cultural continuation.
Along with the construction of Shanghai-Ningbo inter-city metro line (opening in 2010), and Beijing-Shanghai high speed rail (2013), Kunshan entered into a new metro stage. Kunshan will need a well-established public transit system and a well-connected rapid transit system between different transit nodes. The improvement of urban living quality and sustainable urban development rely on a healthy public transit system. Since BRT systems are widely used internationally and the results are satisfactory, CSTC work with local and national planning institutions on the feasibility study of BRT in Kunshan.
