On July 17, 2007, CSTC translated and published the Chinese Version of Book "Transit Metropolis". The book is written by Robert Cervo, translated by CSTC and published by China Architechture and Building Press under the authorization of Island Press, U.S.A.

On June 8, 2007, Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) published the Bus Rapid Transit Planning Guide. The Guide is intended as a guidance document for a range of parties involved in delivering public transport services to urban areas. Planning Guide encompasses six major components in BRT planning: project preparation, operational design, physical design, integration, business plan, evaluation and implementation. The document is currently in English and will be translated to Chinese by CSTC soon.

April 23, 2007
On April 20, 2007, the first training for the Chinese Urban Public Transit Week and Car Free Day was organized by the Ministry of Construction in Beijing. The Vice Minister, Mr. QI Ji opened the meeting and gave a speech. There were more than 300 participants from 120 Chinese cities attended the training. Experiences and know-hows in public transit priorities, green transportation, car free day activities from around the world, and the proposed programs in several Chinese cities for the Public Transit Week and Car Free Day were presented and discussed at the training. China Sustainable Transportation Center supports the training and the Public Transit Week and Car Free Day initiatives.



March 26, 2007
In March 2007, CSTC completed and published "Jakarta’s Experiences with Bus Rapid Transit Development and What Chinese Cities Can Learn from" in 2007 issue 2 of "Urban Transport of China". The paper analyzes the background, components and characters, and summarizes the experiences and lessons with the BRT system development in Jakarta, as well as what Chinese cities can learn from.


February 11, 2007 
On February 10, 2007, Shenzhen started the construction of BRT Line 1. The mayor participated in the ceremony. Stretching along a main east-west transit passenger corridor, Shenzhen BRT Line 1 has a trunk line of 23.3 km in length and two feeder lines of 9.6 km in total. The east end of the route is at the board of Hong Kong. The first BRT corridor has one depot, five terminals and twenty-eight stations. The BRT system will integrate with the subway system at several stations.

The project features include:
1) Exclusive center BRT running way; 2) Enclosed stations; 3) High-capacity, high-performance, low-emission vehicles; 4) Pre-boarding ticketing and level boarding; and 5) Various ITS technologies.

According to the Shenzhen BRT development plan, a BRT network of 5 corridors with 130 km will be constructed by 2011.

February 09, 2007
On January 11, 2007, Beijing Mayor Mr. WANG Qishan awarded the 2006 Great Wall Friendship Awards to Mr. XU Kangming, CSTC's BRT program consultant, to honor his contributions to Beijing's BRT development. The Great Wall Friendship Award, given annually, is the highest honour given by the Beijing Municipal Government to foreign experts who have made contributions to Beijing's economic and cultural development.

January 26, 2007
In January 2007, CSTC completed two papers titled "Bogota's Experiences with Bus Rapid Transit Development" and "Chinese Cities Can Learn from Bogota's Experiences with Bus Rapid Transit Development". CSTC also organized the translation and edition of the paper titled "Columbia's Urban Transport System Must be completely Overhauled", written by Bogota's former mayor, Mr. Enrique Penalosa Londono, in 1985. These three papers were published in January 2007, Issue 1 of "Urban Transport of China". All three papers explore the experiences of Bogota's Bus Rapid Transit Development and what Chinese cities can learn from it.

January 22, 2007
On January 22, 2007, the China Sustainable Transportation Center posted "Beijing BRT is a Solution to Beijing Traffic Gridlock" on the CSTC website. Prepared by Beijing BRT Company, the report introduces such subjects as the development of BRT in Beijing, BRT planning and design considerations, and operation and management experiences. The report concludes that public transit is the only solution to Beijing's traffic congestion and stresses the critical role for BRT in improving urban transport systems. The Chinese version of the report is available on the CSTC website.

January 15, 2007
On January 15, 2007, the China Sustainable Transportation Center released its "Sao Paulo Bus Terminal Photo Report". The report begins with a summary of design experiences and reference information regarding formulas and calculation methodology, followed by photographs of various terminal locations and designs in Sao Paulo. The Chinese version of the report is available on the CSTC website.

January 10, 2007
In January 2007, CSTC completed a research paper, titled "Comparative Analysis of the Convenience of Transfer for Beijing Bus Rapid Transit and Subway". The paper analyzes data from various BRT stations and Subway stations in Beijing, and finds that the convenience of transfer for the BRT system clearly exceeds that of the subway system. The Chinese version of the report has been published on the CSTC website.

December 15, 2006
On December 15, 2006, the China Sustainable Transportation Center released its "Beijing BRT No.1 Line Photo Album (II)". It contains pictures of the Beijing BRT No.1 Line's various features such as its bird's eye view, BRT connecting the heart of Beijing, center station, pre-boarding fare collections, sections with and without median and urban renovation.

November 30, 2006
In November 2006, CSTC completed and published "Chinese Cities Can Learn from Seoul's Experiences with Public Transport Reform" in 2006 issue 6 of "Urban Transport of China". The paper explores the lessons China can apply from the public transport reforms undertaken in Seoul.

In November 2006, CSTC completed and published "Analysis of Advantages and Benefits for Bus Rapid Transit Stations" in 2006 Issue 6 of "Urban Transport of China". The paper analyzes various types of BRT stations and operational arrangements in Beijing, Hangzhou and Kunming, and finds that busway and pre-boarding fare collection are the two most important elements for mass capacity and speed of operation. 

October 25, 2006
CSTC staff visited Jakarta, Indonesia in July 2006 to study Jakarta's BRT (TransJakarta) system. The experiences and lessons of TransJakarta development were summarized and published on the CSTC website.

The U.S. Federal Transit Administration (FTA) delegation visited China in April 2006 to study BRT development in China. The final report named "Bus Rapid Transit Developments in China, Perspectives from Research, Meetings, and Site Visits in April 2006" was published in July 2006.

In September 2006, CSTC conducted a research on the comparison of headway variation and dwelling time between Beijing BRT Line 1 and a conventional bus route. The results demonstrate the advantages of BRT system over the conventional bus. The report in Chinese was published on the CSTC website.

On September 18, 2006, the China Sustainable Transportation Center obtained the authorization from the American Island Press for the translation of the book "The Transit Metropolis" into Chinese, publication and distribution of the book in Chinese version throughout the world. This book is written by Professor Robert Cervero, Chair in the Department of City and Regional Planning at the University of California, Berkeley.

Under the serious threats of increasing worldwide automobile dependence, the book provides mass transit success stories through case studies of twelve world-famous metropolises where a workable relationship exists between transit services and urban form. The author believes that the transit metropolis is a promising model for building sustainable pathways to the future.

September 11, 2006
On September 6th, 2006, the China Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Technical Association, under the authority of the China Urban Public Transport Association (CUPTA), was established at a meeting in Hangzhou. The directors, chair and secretary-general were elected, and the bylaws were adopted during the meeting. JIN Fan, the Executive Director of the China Sustainable Transportation Center, was appointed as an adviser to the China BRT Technical Association.

About 180 persons from public transit companies, bus and accessory manufacturers, and related research institutions in Chinese cities participated this meeting. Additionally, representatives from the cities of Beijing, Kunming and Hangzhou presented their experiences in BRT planning, implementation and operation at the meeting.

August 16, 2006
On August 6, 2006, Liu Qi, Chairman of the Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee, who is also the Party Secretary of Beijing Municipality, said at the interview by the major Medias in Beijing, "The existing bus rapid transit (BRT) line in Beijing has shown the full benefits as a form of rapid public transit. Beijing is expanding bus rapid transit system to implement the public transit priority strategy in the urban area."

July 27, 2006

The construction of  Xi'an BRT No.1 Line  started on July 26, 2006. It has an exclusive center BRT bus-lane and 5-meter wide island stations.
 
The 18.12-km line will be built in the following three phases:

1) The first section of 4.69 km in downtown (within the city wall) will be completed by Feb. 2007;

2) The second section of 7.91 km extended eastward and westward will be completed by the end of 2007; and

3) The third (last) section of 5.52 km will be completed by the end of 2008.

In May 2006, CSTC completed two research projects analyzing passenger boarding and alighting speed and bus dwelling time at bus rapid transit stations. The results demonstrate the advantages of BRT in comparison with conventional buses.  The reports in Chinese were published on the CSTC website.

The second BRT corridor built in China, Hangzhou's 28-km-long BRT B1line officially went into operation on April 26, 2006 after just 16 months of planning and construction. The corridor incorporates most key BRT characteristics and uses high-technology domestically-made buses.

The corridor spans the city east to west.  The western terminus is Huanglong station, an important interchange station close to the Huanglong Physical Center and two kilometers north of Hangzhou's world-famous West Lake; the eastern terminus is in Hangzhou's national economic technology development area, in the eastern part of Xiashagaojiao University City.

The operation management, terminal design, fare collection system, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) used in Hangzhou's BRT B1 line are exemplars of BRT design and operation.

March 18, 2006

CSTC staff visited Seoul in March 2006 to learn about South Korea's BRT development experiences and study its BRT systems firsthand. The CSTC delegation met with the Seoul Development Institute (SDI), Korea Transport Institute (KOTI), and Transport Operation and Information Service (TOPIS) and visited several sustainable urban transportation systems in Seoul.  SDI authorized CSTC to translate a book detailing Seoul's sustainable public transportation development experiences, Toward Better Public Transport – Experiences and Achievements of Seoul, into Chinese.

In March 2006, CSTC completed and published "BRT Development in China" in 2006 issue 3 of "Urban Planning Overseas". The paper introduces what is the BRT, and the progress of Chinese city to develop the BRT systems.


January 4, 2006
On January 2 and 3 at 8:08 p.m., a TV program created by Beijing TV Channel 5 (BTV-5), "The Dilemma of Beijing Public Transit," was broadcasted. The program showed the transportation problems facing Beijing and highlighted BRT as a way to redress these problems.

December 31, 2005
On December 30, China's first BRT corridor went into full operation. With a length of 16 km and a capacity of approximately 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction, the corridor will link Beijing's southern suburbs with the urban center. Beijing's second and third BRT corridors are being designed and will begin construction in 2006.

A BRT Brochure designed and printed by CSTC was distributed to government officials and the general public at the December 30th opening of Beijing's first BRT corridor.

On December 19, the Hefei Planning Association hosted a conference on "Urban Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Systems" in Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province. CSTC Director JIN Fan gave a presentation on BRT development in China.

November 18, 2005
On November 16-17, the Association of Chinese Mayors, China City Public Transit Association, and Ministry of Construction hosted a conference on "Urban Public Transport Development Strategy and Public Transit Terminal Development" in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province. CSTC Director JIN Fan was invited to give a presentation introducing CSTC.

October 19, 2005
On October 19, CSTC hosted an "International Forum on Implementing Bus Rapid Transit" in Beijing. The forum brought together more than 200 researchers, professionals, government officials, and policymakers from China and abroad to discuss experiences in developing and implementing BRT systems.
