Chinese National NMT Guideline Issued

The China Urban Non-Motorized Transportation (NMT) System Planning and Design Technical Guideline was formally issued by MOHURD on December 31, 2013. This is the first such document from the Chinese government to promote biking and walking exclusively that was created with the strong support of the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design (CAUPD) and China Sustainable Transportation Center (CSTC). It provides comprehensive guidance to both government officials and practitioners, from NMT network planning to detailed design. It is a national document has been distributed to all provinces and cities across the country, with trainings to follow.
 
With the aforementioned technical guideline in place, MOHURD launched the third phase of its national NMT demonstration project, first initiated in 2010, and expanded to about 100 cities. The adoption of the China Urban Non-Motorized Transportation (NMT) System Planning and Design Technical Guideline helped spark this expansion. By the end of 2014, there will be about 100 cities building demonstration corridors for biking and/or walking.
